All has been quiet on plans to provide a Southern Rail Link from potentailly Basingstoke, Guildford, and Waterloo to Heathrow Airport Terminal 5.
This week the Sadiq Khan Mayor of London indicated that he still supports the scheme due to the "useful role that a Southern Rail Link to Heathrow could play in supporting a shift to sustainable modes, while transforming access to Heathrow Airport for passengers and staff from South London, Surrey and Hampshire.”
He also mentioned that he is aware that a number of factors coming together in recent months have increased the prospects of a scheme moving forward. It is thought that one of these factors may be the ability of the scheme to unlock housing schemes. Another factor may be the truncation of HS2 at Old Oak Common and that a southern Heathrow Link might extend through to Old Oak common making the use of HS2 far easier for those in the South West London and Surrey.
A rail jouney to Heathrow currently takes around 2 hours from Guildford, or 45 minutes by car. The argument is that rail upgrades would help reduce car use. Currently only about a fifth of people heading to Heathrow from the southwest use public transport. Note London Heathrow has tough environmental targets to reach to reduce operational (Buildings, Ground Transport etc) emissions from the airport.
There are several schems proposed for a southern rail link. One of the more respected options is that proposed by Heathrow Southern Railway - See Brochure below.
