Guildford Flood Alleviation Scheme

Town Centre at Risk

The Environment Agency, Guildford Borough Council and Surrey County Council are working together to develop a scheme to reduce flood risk to homes, businesses, and infrastructure in Guildford town centre.  This covers an area from Millbrook Car Park to Ladymead.  The Scheme covers both River Flooding and Surface Flooding, caused by rainfall.  Aspects of the Scheme will affect both the Riverbank and interventions to capture run off in the hills around the Town Centre. 

In January 2026 the Environment showed its latest thinking on the scheme at a public consultation event, the posters used at the event can be found at the foot of the post. 

Notable Features/Issues

  • The Flood Protection proposed will be circa approximately 1.4M High either as exisiting Buildings, Flood Wall, or Earth Bund.
  • Walnut Tree Bridge will have its eastern abutment removed and replaced by an additional bridge span plus access ramp.

  • Town Bridge Will be altered by the removal of the arches from the Bridge.
  • A new Footbridge will replace the pedestrian bridge at the rear of the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre crossing to Millbank.
  • The Yvonne Arnaud and White house Pub will be unprotected.
  • Circa 8-10 Flood Gates will have to be operated at times of flooding.
