Design Codes - the future for planning?

MHCLG Produce a Model Design Code

It can be argued that Design Codes trace their origins back to influential treatises such as Palladio’s 'I Quattro Libri dell’Architettura' and the planning and styles promulgated by the Wood’s in Bath.

The MHCLG have recently embraced the idea following the Building Better Beautiful Report and the Planning for the Future White Paper.

As promised as part of the consultation on the Planning for the Future White Paper a document detailing a National Model Design code has been published.

Design Codes in Guildford

Two major developments in Guildford Wisley and Weyside have produced Design Documents as part of their planning information.  The Weyside one developed by JTP Architects is more detailed as befits the Weyside scheme being more advanced.

The Wisley scheme produced by GSA Architects is as yet not fully detailed.

The Society has a positive attitude to the production of Design Codes especially for large multi-year developments.  We will obviously comment on the Design Codes as they come up as part of the Planning application Process.
