Social Housing Complex Wins

A social housing complex for those aged 65 and over, Appleby Blue Almshouse by Witherford Watson Mann Architects, has won the 2025 RIBA Stirling Prize. Located in Bermondsey, London, the development features community-focused spaces designed to combat social isolation, including light-filled hallways, a communal roof terrace, a “garden room,” and a shared kitchen with regular events. The project’s design was praised for setting a new standard in social housing for older adults, emphasizing co-living and resident interaction at a time of housing shortages and rising loneliness. Appleby Blue consists of 59 flats arranged around a central courtyard with green spaces. It triumphed over projects such as the restoration of Elizabeth Tower, the new London College of Fashion, and several innovative residential and commercial buildings.

Witherford Watson Mann Architects have done a wide range of projects over the years their work can be seen at the prctice website.  The practice has also uploaded a short film on Appleby Blue that can be found on this link.
