Alternative Fuel Buses - Impact on the Town Centre

The move to alternatively fuelled buses appears to be gathering pace with both Electric and Hydrogen Fuelled vehicles appearing on the roads.  The range for these vehicles is increasing, an Edinburgh to Dundee electric coach service is just launching.

In addition hybrid buses are becoming more sophisticated with techniques such as Geofencing - where the bus automatically switches to electric power in defined areas - becoming available.  This is due to be used in Brighton.

These vehicles will have a impact on how we plan our town centre.  The Bus Station is due to be rebuilt within the proposed North Street redevelopment - agreeing that the new bus station would accept only vehicles using electric or hydrogen would allow for it to be designed with appropriate recharging facilities and optimised ventialtion.

Alternative fuelled vehicles will be substantially quieter and less polluting which can make bus services through Pedestrian Areas and narrow roads more acceptable - there may be opportunities to be exploited.
