Intensive Investment Offered for Green Towns and Cities

24 November 2020

Guildford should engage with this initiative.

Government Investment to become like Holland

Tucked away in the recent ‘Gear Change A bold vision for cycling and walking’ (See Below - Page 19) is a statement about the government wishing to ‘stimulate a large number of proposals across the country, from which we will choose up to 12 willing non-London local authority areas, to benefit from intensive investment in mini-Holland schemes’ cycle paths, pedestrian separation etc.

The main focus will be on replacing short car trips. They must be places where cycling is currently low and where there is serious political commitment to dramatic change – not just for cyclists, but for everyone who lives and works there.

Zero Emision City

The government is looking for at least one small or medium-sized city which wants to create a zero-emission transport system, with extensive bike lanes, an all electric (or zero-emission) bus fleet, and a ban on nearly all petrol and diesel vehicles in the city centre, with deliveries made to consolidation hubs and the last mile being done by cargo bike or electric van.

An opportunity for Guildford?

This proposal is an opportunity for Guildford.  The council has initated the Guildford Economic Regeneration Programme Masterplan Strategy / Town Centre Masterplan; and in 2019 declared a Climate Crisis.

Guildford is twinned with Freiburg, already one of the greenest and most inovative  cities in Europe, and the Univesity of Surrey has excellent academic resources related to climate change.

Guildford should act to access this funding, to accelerate its journey to become a green, resilient, and sustainable town.
