Tumbling Bay Bridge - Replacement Works Starts.
Work appears to have begun on replacing the bridge at Tumbling Bay Weir in central Guildford, restoring a long-disrupted route for walkers. The Millbrook Tumbling Bay Weir has been impassable since 2019, when a footbridge and weir was swept away during flooding.
Emergency repairs were carried out to the weir, which dates back to the early 1900s, but securing funding and drawing up plans for a permanent replacement of both the weir and the footbridge has taken several years.
The closure has blocked the Wey Footpath on the western side of the river for anyone heading south from the town centre near Millmead and the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. For six years, walkers have been diverted to the eastern bank and have had to cross back to the west side near Guildford Rowing Club.

The large crane installed in Millbrook car park will be used to instal the new bridge and associated weir on the opposite bank of the river. It is to be hoped that the weather is dry during this period to facilitate completing the work.
