Removing the Bus Station

A Scheme with Relevance to Guildford

Swindon Borough Council has been awarded £25m funding, towards creating a Bus Boulevard Scheme, through the Government’s Future High Streets Fund, which supports local areas’ plans to make their high streets and town centres fit for the future.

The bus boulevard will take over Fleming Way which will be closed all cars.  The existing bus station will be demolished, making way for the construction of new homes and offices in the town centre.

As part of the Bus Boulevard plans, all national and local bus services will be incorporated along Fleming Way, improving the experience of bus users and pedestrians, while the new road layout completes links between Eastern and Western cycle routes.

The scheme will also feature much-improved pedestrian and cycle routes and the removal of a current underpass creating an attractive route from the train station into the town centre, encouraging further investment in the area.

Guildford Town Centre Masterplan

Swindon, like many other towns and cities have elected to move from a central bus station to a distributed approach integrated with the town.  It will be interesting to see, what approaches the Guildford Town Centre Masterplan recomends.
