Shaping Guildford's Future (SGF) has a had a lenghty gestation covering a couple of years. The project has progressed to defining the 3rd stage of the project which was to make the proposals fully defined with supporting policies.
The project produced a useful video of its summary ideas in the spring. The publishing of this video got 'lost' in the debate related to the local election, including the hot topic of the height of buildings in Guildford.
Since the Local Elections it is unclear as to how the SGF progrmme is to be progressed. Approx £3Million has been spent so far with many valuable studies produced e.g. Flooding in the Town Centre. A roughly equal sum may be needed to complete the work. However much of this activity will be required to review the Local Plan and also to produce good town centre policies e.g. Height of Buildings which were discussed at the 2023 local elections.

The Society has supported the development of a Masterplan for the Town centre and has been frustrated by the lack of progress in bringing forward a plan for approval. This has been in part due to budgetary constraints.

Pressures for development are increasing. Planning rules are being eased. The Society’s commitment to standing up for Guildford is needed more than ever.
