An opportunity to visit Norney Grange Friday October 3rd
Charles Voysey is one of the most significant architects active in the late 19th early 20th Century. He designed several houses in Surrey. The Society has arranged to visit one of his houses on the Friday October 3rd at 10am. Norney Grange, Shackleford was designed in 1897 for the Reverend Leighton Crane.
Book for the Visit. You will be asked to provide an e-mail address this is so we can send you details of final arrangements and any changes to plans. The e-mail is deleted after the event.
Voysey belonged to the Arts and Crafts movement, including a group of architects and designers, met in the Bloomsbury offices of Norman Shaw.
Voysey’s approach was holistic; he designed everything. The metalwork gutters, down pipes, door handles, key holes and keys, fireplaces, air vents and hinges. He also designed the doors, fitted cupboards and dressers.
Norney Grange tries to combine the grand – the long north face, the large front hall – with the smaller, the domestic. The western extension is small, lower and full of variety is the windows around the chimney at the eastern end are tiny. The octagonal bedroom within has an inglenook and bay. Voysey breaks the whole to make it seem less grand.
Voysey is excellent with scale and with proportion. He is also good with sight lines. Setting Norney on a gentle slope with climbing plants and with different expanses of lawn, he offers a range of scales and of views of a sensitively integrated whole.
Help us make Guildford better
We want our town to be vibrant, attractive and liveable. We support development that brings a sense of place and enhances the best aspects of our town. If such aims can be embraced, we believe Guildford has the chance to lead the way in enabling sensitive and sustainable development.
Pressures for development are increasing. Planning rules are being eased. The Society’s commitment to standing up for Guildford is needed more than ever.
