London updates its Strategic Plan

Towards a New London Plan

Consultation has now started on the development of a new London Plan the spatial development strategy for Greater London. It sets out a framework for how London will develop over the next 20-25 years supporting the current mayor's vision of 'good growth'.

The Mayor in his forward states:

"This document sets out a path towards my next London Plan, the strategic framework that will guide and shape our city’s development in the years ahead.

The next London Plan will be a blueprint for how we can continue to build the fairer, greener city that Londoners deserve. It will aim to make the best possible use of City Hall’s planning powers to achieve two key objectives. These are to fix the housing crisis in London and deliver sustainable economic growth that benefits Londoners across our city, all while ensuring we continue to meet our ambitious climate commitments and improve our environment and green spaces".

The Plan is part of the statutory development plan for London, meaning the policies in the Plan should inform decisions on planning applications across the capital. Borough’s Local Plans must be in ‘general conformity’ with the London Plan. This ensures the planning system for London is joined up and reflects the overall strategy for how London can develop sustainably, which the London Plan sets out.

The current London Plan was published in 2021, thus the the Mayor has started the process to prepare the next Plan.

Why this matters to Guildford?

• London has a massive impact on Surrey and Guildford due to it's economic influence. 
• London also provides ideas and policies that may be valuable in the creation of the GBC Local Plan Update e.g. guidance on Building Height and Layouts.
• The Spatial Plan can influence what happens locallyin terms of Spatial Planning and Transport links as it will impact issues such as Greenbelt Land, and the development of new employment areas.
