Decarbonising our Transport Network

A perspective from a major transport technology supplier

Alstom is a leading company in delivering sustainable and smart mobility systems, from high speed trains, regional and suburban trains, undergrounds (metros), trams and e-buses, to integrated systems, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility. (A third of all rail journeys take place on Alstom trains including the Pendolino trains on the West Coast Mainline.)

Alstom have produced a wide ranging report ‘The UK’s New Green Age’ responding to recent government initiatives concerning green issues.  Obviously it takes a major supplier view on transport issues but nevertheless is a useful read.

The report makes a case for:

  • A long-term funding programme to promote green transport
  • Support for mayors, regions and authorities to draw up and develop programmes.
  • Proper coordination across relevant government departments including DfT, MHCLG, DEFRA, BEIS and HMT
  • Linking transport schemes and other programmes such as housing.
  • The development of schemes and decision-making including procurement should be accelerated and could benefit from the ‘Project Speed’ approach and the DfT’s Acceleration Unit can focus on these schemes too.
  • A pipeline of schemes gives certainty, brings down costs and enable a skills, jobs and supply chain programme to be developed.
