Social & Membership Annual Report 2014

02nd June 2014

The group has been eight members strong for most of this year. However Barbara Logan (who masterminded the catering for meetings, in particular the Christmas meeting) has resigned, and Jane Vessey has had to retire from this month to pursue other interests. Our thanks to both of these members, and to Gillian Cameron our Chair.

We see our main responsibilities as provision of social events and meetings, and communication to members and (to a lesser extent) with the outside world.

Social Programme: There has been a meeting of The Society at least once per month. In summer events were a visit in July to Winchester where we were entertained by the Winchester Trust, their civic society, and in August a Mystery Visit to Chawton House (and Library) – the property of Jane Austen’s brother.

In the other months throughout the year we presented a varied mix of subjects for discussion, the most significant being those covering activity on the Local Plan development: Julian Lyon and Bill Stokoe on The Society’s response to GBC’s published material, Monica Juneja from GBC itself, Anne Milton MP, Kim Rippett of GBC on Social Housing, and “Challenges & Opportunities” as seen by the University of Surrey. There were contrasting meetings on the Ashtead Roman Villa and visits to both the Royal Grammar School and to the Academy of Contemporary Music. Finally, to cap it all, at the Christmas Social this year the Magic Circle’s former President gave a polished and professional talk on the history of magic.

The Group is involved in setting up the annual Architecture Lecture; and works with GBC in planning and running the annual Heritage Days – a continued success every year.

Website: The Society is modernising its logo and its website. The artwork for the new logo is nearing completion and will be incorporated in the newly designed and polished website. This is a very professional piece of work driven by Barry Williams and a software consultancy.

Internal Communication: the bi-annual Newsletter was published as usual in July and January, by David Smith, editor. Support for this publication was confirmed by members who were asked if they felt it was still relevant and wanted it to continue. It is proposed that we should publish monthly a single-sheet Newsletter to be distributed by email so that the six-monthly publication will be more like a Magazine.

John Shorto maintains records, and development of their systems, on the members list, and has progressed this work admirably.
