Lecture - Multiple Housing Design

09 September 2021

20th October 19:00hrs at University of Surrey.

The Society is pleased to annouce the free Annual Architecture Lecture held in conjuction with the University of Surrey.

Providing quality multiple housing has a special importance for Guildford with several large new developments planned in the Town Centre, Weyside, Wisley, Blackwell Farm and Gosden Hill.

The lecture will be provided by Senior Members of two architectural practices (FCBStudios and GHA) who have demonstrated good design in major housing projects.  The Society is keen to see the design quality of multiple housing schemes improved in the Borough.

Each of the practices will give a short lecture with reference to their work, with time allowed for questions at the end.

FCBStudios is an architectural practice with an international reputation for design quality and for pioneering environmental issues in architecture. They have wide experience in designing for education, housing, workplace and masterplanning . The practice is committed to social and humanistic values and they believe excellence in design can facilitate change, improvement and transformation in society.

FCBStudios Stirling Prize winning  Accordia housing is widely regarded as setting new standards for housing in the UK.  Ten of their housing schemes have won RIBA National Housing Design Awards.

FCBStudios have participated in a range of national housing steering groups, including the RIBA Brownfields First Initiative and the joint CABE, Civic Trust and House Builders Federation initiative.

The shortfall in new housing is a vital issue and FCBStudios believe that an emphasis on design quality should be at the forefront of new initiatives. Key to their work is the reduction of emissions from buildings, in the operation, the use of heating, lighting, ventilation or the energy that goes into producing them.

GHA has a wealth of experience in designing and delivering award winning homes. The practice believes that the best housing relies on understanding issues at all scales from the larger urban questions down to the small components that help shape people’s everyday lives.

Recent award-winning housing projects include a new island neighbourhood for 1,706 homes at London City Island, where a brownfield site has been transformed using strongly coloured structural Modern Method of Construction (MMC) frames for ten residential blocks. The Island is also a cultural hub and home to the new (RIBA Award winning) English National Ballet HQ, London Film School and numerous galleries and local arts projects.

Royal Wharf is another entirely new neighbourhood along the Thames riverfront in East London, where GHA has masterplanned the former brownfield site creating a community with 10,000 homes alongside a school, community centre, heath centre, shops and cafes and a new local pub.

Wardian London represents botanically inspired living on an exceptional waterside location in the Isle of Dogs, London. The stand-out feature of the buildings are the four-sided balconies wrapping each residential level, and the bold expression of the balconies lend the towers a clear residential identity.
