‘Glimpses of Guildford’: An Exhibition of drawings and paintings by Boris Fijalkowski'

Saturday 10 March - Saturday 24 March: Guildford House Gallery welcomes Boris Fijalkowski with an exhibition of drawings to go on show in the Garden Room and the Brew House.

Boris Fijalkowski has lived and worked in Guildford for over 51 years. An architect by profession, Boris has also devoted his talents to producing hundreds of watercolours and drawings of buildings in town and rural settings in this country and abroad.

On his long-standing interest in drawing, Boris says, “I started sketching at the age of five and have never stopped. I am interested in studying and drawing buildings of all historic periods, from grand houses to country sheds and ancient ruins; I also enjoy focusing on details such as gates, doors, steeples and chimneys.”

This exhibition concentrates on images of buildings within Guildford Borough with an emphasis on historic landmarks in the town centre, many of which have been published in the 2004 book, ‘Glimpses of Guildford’.

Originally from Poland, Boris and his mother were exiled to Siberia by the Soviets but managed to trek to safety in Iran where Boris joined the Polish Army and eventually served with the British 8th Army in the Italian Campaign. After the war, Boris studied at the Polish School of Architecture in London and ultimately settled in Guildford. A small selection of drawings from Boris’s early years will be on display.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Mayor of Guildford and The Guildford Society.

Boris’s work will be on display in the Garden Room on the Ground floor and in the Brew House until Saturday 24 March 2012.
