May 2015 - A visit to The Brooking National Collection

14th May 2015

On the 14th May 2015 a small group of Guildford Society members visited the nearby village of Cranleigh and The Brooking National Collection of the UK, a fascinating store of architectural features. For many years since early childhood, its founder Charles Brooking has single mindedly been recovering architectural details of houses as they become available from demolition or alterations to buildings.

He has created a unique collection, particularly of windows, stairs, porches, mouldings and ironmongery that has become an invaluable archive and reference for historians, architects, conservators  and designers alike. Exhibits came from all over the UK ranging from humble houses to great country houses and Royal Palaces.

The Cranleigh site features only a small part of the collection but  includes salvaged material from Guildford properties and the wider Surrey region. In 2014, Charles was invited to display part of his vast collection of nearly 1 million artefacts at the Venice Biennale Architectural Exhibition. The challenge for the recently formed charity " The Brooking National Architectural Museum Trust " is to find larger premises to enable the full collection to be displayed.
