Success in London and Devon

Recent passenger numbers for the recently opened Elizabeth Line, Northern Line Extension and the reopened line to Oakhampton in Devon have been published recently.

Elizabeth Line

A landmark 100 million journeys have been made on the Elizabeth line, little more than eight months since it opened. Transport for London said the milestone was reached on Wednesday morning, in the latest sign of how passengers have flocked to the £20bn line since last May.  The line is now carrying about 600,000 passengers on weekdays and more than three million a week, well in excess of the two million that were expected. It is the single busiest rail line in the UK.

The fare income for the current financial year is about £50m higher than anticipated and Transport for London expects it to break even on a day-to-day basis by the end of the next financial year.

The line appears to have had limited impact on ridership levels of Tube lines it parallels notably the Central Line.

Northern Line

The Extension to Battersea has seen 5 million users in its first year and its passenger numbers are predicted to increase to 10million within the decade.  There is renewed discussion of extending from Battersea to Clapham Junction.

Oakhampton Line

On a different Scale the recently reopened Dartmoor line from Exeter to Okehampton  has been used for 258,479 journeys in the year since its reopening.  This number is over 200% above the usage originally proposed.
