Batteries to the Rescue?

With the demise of the programme to provide refurbished trains (class 769 - see post below) on the North Downs Line what next for the services?

The North Downs Line has always been discussed as a candidate for modernisation and in particular electrification.  There are barriers to modernisation apart from funding,

Firstly constraints due to the level crossing in Reigate.  This will require a major scheme to provide a bridge in the centre of the town.  This is being considered.

Secondly, a massive reluctance by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) to agree to further 3rd rail electrification.  The ORR are concerned at the safety issues with 3rd rail as opposed to overhead wires.  There seems little reliable information on fatality rates due to electrocution on the rail network and many think ORR caution is misplaced.  The lack of electrification also affects the line to Hastings and along part of the South Coast.

Battery Units.

Some areas are looking to use electric trains and trams with the addition of batteries fitted.  The batteries allow gaps in electrification on rail and tram lines to be managed effectively.

A good example are the new Class777 trains being introduced in Liverpool.  A proportion of the fleet will be fitted with batteries to allow operation away from electrified routes.  Liverpool is going to use this facility to extend their regional network.  The new trains built by Stadler in Switzerland operate as a normal electric train with the facility whilst in operation to charge batteries.  The battery pack allows operation for between 40KMs to 55KMS on non-electrified routes. 

The North Downs Route from Reading to Gatwick covers approximately 83KMS of which 46 KMS is not electrified (Shalford to Reigate, and Ash to Wokingham).  The longest stretch without electrification is 27KMS from Shalford to Reigate.

An Opportunity?

Units like the Class777 would remove the noise and pollution from ageing diesel units and provide flexibility, as if electrification is proceeded with they can still operate, potentially with batteries removed to reduce maintenance.
