Much Respected former chairman of the Guildford Society and founding member of GVG dies

The Society was sad to hear that Michael Jeffery a former chairman of the Guildford Society passed away before Christmas, he had been in failing health for the past few months.

Michael was an Architect by profession ultimately being part of the JAA/Ryder alliance.  He had a major interest in heritage and church projects.  He loved and cared for Guildford.

Michael moved to Guildford in the 1970’s and became heavily involved with the Guildford Society and also the Vivace Chorus (music was one of his passions).

He chaired our Design Group from the early eighties for over twenty years, this included organising the Design Awards that continue to this day.  Having joined the Society executive in 1992 he became chairman of the Society from 2009 to 2013.  He continued to serve on the executive until very recently and anfter chairing the Society resumed his chairmanship of the Design Group until 2019.  Society members have been recently reviewing the archive of old correspondence and have been struck by the number of letters and plans he created over the years.

Michael, on behalf of the Society, managed the Town Bridge Market which still operates to this day, The Town Bridge Market paved the way for the larger markets that have operated in the High Street in recent times.

During Michaels’s time as chairman, he was heavily involved in the setting up of the Guildford Vision Group that has campaigned for a proper Town Centre Masterplan.   The production of a masterplan is now underway for the Council.  Michael was a key participant in early meetings and continued to attend the regulary.

Michael was a true gentleman in every sense of the word, very patient and courteous.  He was punctilious in writing letters of thanks and to welcome new members.  He was a man of great faith; and served as warden of the Cathedral and a surveyor of its fabric for some years.

Guildford has lost a pillar of our town.  Our thoughts are with Michael's wife Anna and the rest of his family at this difficult time

Help us make Guildford better

We want our town to be vibrant, attractive and liveable. We support development that brings a sense of place and enhances the best aspects of our town. If such aims can be embraced, we believe Guildford has the chance to lead the way in enabling sensitive and sustainable development.

Pressures for development are increasing. Planning rules are being eased. The Society’s commitment to standing up for Guildford is needed more than ever.
